F.A.Q.
You’ve got questions. We’ve got answers.
Yes—especially in climates with freeze-thaw cycles like Ontario. Salt (sodium chloride or calcium chloride) can cause concrete to crack, flake, and crumble by forming calcium oxychloride crystals that expand and degrade the surface. Over time, salt also corrodes reinforcing steel, leading to internal structural damage.
That said, we do not recommend avoiding salt altogether—safety is a priority. Instead, use it sparingly after proper snow removal. Sand can also be a more environmentally friendly alternative to improve traction without chemical impact.
Concrete walkways and structures are:
Durable – Built to withstand heavy traffic and harsh weather.
Low Maintenance – Easy to clean and manage over time.
Cost-Effective – Offers long-term value at competitive prices.
Versatile – Can be shaped, finished, or colored to suit your design needs.
These qualities make concrete a top choice for both residential and commercial applications.
Concrete requires minimal upkeep. To maintain its appearance and integrity:
Keep it clean by removing dirt and stains with soapy water.
Avoid chemical spills or heavy impacts.
Consider applying a concrete-specific sealer to protect from moisture and staining—though note it may prevent the natural development of patina.
Yes, but with caveats:
Integral or dusted color can be added while wet, but may weaken surface durability in cold climates.
Concrete paints are not recommended for high-traffic exteriors—they often flake or peel.
Concrete stains are a strong option, offering vibrant, permanent color and added moisture resistance. Always test on a sample area first.
Cracking can occur due to seasonal expansion and contraction. To reduce the risk:
Use high-strength (MPa/PSI) concrete mixes.
Ensure steel reinforcement and proper thickness for load-bearing areas.
Apply saw cuts at precise locations to control and guide cracking in a clean, uniform way that can even enhance aesthetics.
If cracks do appear, they can often be repaired rather than replaced—especially if the structure is still sound.
